The growing season of some plants in the understory of beech forests is very short because beech trees have dense canopies that block out much of the sunlight reaching the forest floor. This limited sunlight availability restricts the amount of photosynthesis that can occur, which is essential for plant growth. Additionally, the beech trees' shallow root systems compete with understory plants for water and nutrients, further limiting their growth potential. As a result, understory plants in beech forests have a brief window of time during the year when conditions are optimal for growth before the canopy leafs out and reduces sunlight even further. **
